This week's Classic Rock Throwback Thursday is a sad one. It was on this day in 1977, we lost Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Also lost in the plane crash was their assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and the two pilots. The plane ran out of fuel toward the end of the flight to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Artimus Pyle and a couple others who survived the crash had to trek through the woods to get help.

The album that Lynyrd Skynyrd had been supporting with a tour was 'Street Survivors.' The record label label changed the cover out of respect for the deceased. It wasn't until 1987 that the band reunited and with many personnel changes over the years, still rocks on to this day.
