2020 has brought about a lot of cancellations, including many that we normally celebrate and participate in every year. One of those celebrations includes parades.

With so much going on, and with assumptions that normal evets won't be taking place, it wasn't until last week that I realized the Binghamton Holiday Parade would have occurred on the weekend before Thanksgiving.

And a month before that, it would have been our annual Halloween Parade. We also have lost the Johnson City Holiday Parade and the Endicott Parade this year. The Johnson City Holiday Parade would have taken place this coming Thursday evening and the Endicott Parade traditionally steps off on the first Saturday of December. Not this Year.

In the years I've been with The Whale, I have never missed being a part of most, if not all three holiday parades. And we've experienced every type of weather event, from an unusually warm late fall day, to snowstorms and downright frigid temperatures. I remember bringing a small propane heater to one of the parades to keep everyone warm while we stood outside waiting for the parade to begin. Guess we weren't smart enough to just sit in the cars and run the heat.

Every year, we look forward to waving to everyone along the parade route. And it gives us an excuse to clean the Whale car inside and out. We tend to be a bit lax when it comes to keeping the car spotless. I blame Jim Free.

Even through there will not be a Holiday Parade in The Village of Endicott, they have planned an event called Light Up Endicott. The village website states that it will be a virtual event live on the their Facebook page beginning at 5 p.m. featuring many events including the lighting of the tree, fireworks and of course an appearance from Santa.

Here's hoping 2021 we will get our local parades back. I can't imagine not having them for another year, including granddaddy of them all, our annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.
