Now that the warm weather months are upon us, we can get outside more to enjoy what I feel is the best part of the year in the Southern Tier of New York and Northeast Pennsylvania.

Gardening, lounging in the backyard, taking your dog or cat for a walk. Yes, I've seen people take their cat for a walk around my neighborhood. Not out of the question, I suppose.

And this is also the time of the year for organized walks and runs for area agencies. Just this past weekend (April 23rd) was the Southern Tier Heart Walk to benefit the American Heart Association, held at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton.

I attended the walk and was amazed and happy to see so many people come out to walk for this important cause. People of all ages joined in, and I'm happy to report that the $300,000 goal for this year was not only met but also shattered.

As of April 24th, the amount raised was over $345,000 and is still on an upward trend. So a big thanks to all who continue to support the Southern Tier Heart Walk and the American Heart Accosication.

According to the American Heart Association website:

...cardiovascular disease occurs every 39 seconds and is the No. 1 killer of all Americans. Heart disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. And congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects. - AHA

Funds raised from these annual Heart Walks across the nation :

...help fund lifesaving science. Science that can create an artificial heart valve. Prevent a stroke. Put scientific advances into doctors’ hands. Correct heart defects in newborn babies. And someday, find a cure for high blood pressure. Science that can teach us all how to live longer and healthier. - AHA
