Sanford Delays Wind Turbine Development

There’s a delay in plans to install wind turbines in one Broome County municipality as residents have objected to the development’s impact on the environment and the appearance of the area.

The Town of Sanford has put a three-month moratorium on the proposal by Calpine energy to put 27 turbines in Sanford and Windsor.

Since the development was proposed and the completion of the applications for the Blue Stone project, residents have packed board meetings and hearings voicing concerns about the noise of the blades, the death rates of birds around the 650-foot tall installations with the number of flight paths through the region of species like bald and golden eagles and the impact of huge towers on the property values surrounding a wind farm.

The Town will take the additional time to go back over the zoning of the properties involved.

Meanwhile, a New York State administrative law judge is half-way through hearings on the project at the Deposit High School.

The State Siting Board has until the end of the year to decide if the multi-million dollar development can proceed.
