Newcomb Schedules Announcement for Broome County Sheriff Campaign
Kathleen Newcomb plans to formally launch her campaign for the Republican nomination for Broome County sheriff soon.
Newcomb, who is a captain in the sheriff's office, in early June indicated she was considering running for the post that David Harder has held since 1999.
Newcomb put out the word late Monday afternoon via social media that she will make her campaign announcement on September 18.
The place where Newcomb will officially launch her effort to become the next sheriff is significant: Grange Hall Park in Kirkwood. That's the site where Deputy Kevin Tarsia was killed while on patrol on July 4, 2002.
Republican state Senator Fred Akshar two months ago he was a candidate for sheriff.
Harder, who joined the sheriff's office in 1964, has said he plans to retire at the end of his current term - his sixth.
