Richard David, who has served as mayor of Binghamton for the past seven-and-a-half years, has kicked off his campaign for the New York state Senate.

The Republican mayor made his announcement Tuesday afternoon before supporters and GOP elected officials in downtown Binghamton.

David is seeking the 52nd District seat now held by Fred Akshar, who has announced he plans to seek the Republican nomination for Broome County sheriff next year.

The mayor will leave office at the end of this year because of Binghamton's two-term limit.

David said he is "concerned about the one-party rule that has gripped Albany." He said "that has to stop."

Akshar said he fully supports David's bid to succeed him in the Senate seat.
