Here is something with a positive outcome from the NYS DEC. Early in December 2024 in Delaware County, after a call in from a passing motorist, DEC Officer Woodin responded to the report of a deer laying on the ice on Spring Lake which is located in the town of Delhi.

According to the NYS DEC, the deer was about 100 yards from the shoreline. Since the ice was not thick enough to walk on, Officer Woodin contacted local authorities for help to rescue the deer.

While waiting for help, Officer Woodin observed a person run out onto the ice with a snow tube from the other side of the lake, in an attempt to rescue the deer. Woodin told the person to stop, but unfortunately, the person fell through the ice, clinging on to the snow tube.

Officer Woodin contacted Delaware County Emergency Services. The person was rescued thanks to the efforts of Office Woodin, Delaware County Emergency Services personnel, and local fire department members.

The NYS DEC noted that after the human rescue, the team tried their efforts to rescue the deer which was still lying on the ice. A rescue boat was used to successfully tow the deer to shore.
