Upcoming Local Roadwork To Be Aware Of

Summertime is road/bridge work and construction time. Plenty of that is happening in the Southern Tier of New York this season to improve our roadways.

Here are a few new road/bridge work items to be aware of:

Vestal

According to the Vestal Police Department, the New York State Department of Transportation has an upcoming construction project ready to begin after July 4th, replacing deteriorating bridge approaches on four bridges on Route 17 over Vestal Road and over the Susquehanna River in the towns of Union and Vestal.
This work will be either on the two westbound bridges or the two eastbound bridges, and vehicle traffic will be crossed over to the opposite side, allowing a single travel lane in each direction through the work zone.
Northbound and southbound Route 26 entrance ramps to Route 17 East will be closed, and a signed detour route will direct vehicles to Route 434 east and Route 201 north to Exit 70 eastbound on ramp to 17 East.
During the time the eastbound bridges are under construction, the Exit 68 Eastbound ramp to Vestal Road will be closed.

Vestal/Endicott Bridge

Bridge inspections are scheduled to take place July 6th through the 10th and again July 13th through the 17th of the County Route 48 truss bridge that connects the Town of Vestal and the Village of Endicott.

This is a part of the planning process for a major bridge rehabilitation project currently scheduled for design and bidding in 2026-2027, with construction anticipated to begin in 2028.

During the inspection, motorists should expect daily lane closures with alternating one-way traffic across the bridge. Significant traffic delays are anticipated, and drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time or seek alternate routes whenever possible.

• Blacktop repairs on Twist Run Road, between Taft Avenue & Nanticoke Drive
• Cleaning ditches on Greenwood Road, Dunham Hill Road, Beartown Road, Old Route
17, North Sanford Road & Old State Road
• Culvert work on East Maine Road, Old State Road & North Sanford Road
• Grader patching on Colesville Road
• Guide rail repairs on Industrial Park, Day Hollow Road, North Sanford Road &
Nanticoke Road
• Mowing the right of way on Broome County roadways
• Striping county roadways with the paint truck
