New York State Electric and Gas blames an equipment failure at its Morningside Heights substation that started at 2:40 p.m. and lasted four hours.

Up to 8,000 customers, including SUNY Broome Community College were affected. In addition to the busy commercial corridor along Front Street where the college is located along with several restaurants, hotels and other businesses, residents in surrounding neighborhoods even stretching out toward Chenango Bridge were without electricity for several hours in the afternoon.

There were no reports of crashes from traffic lights being out but Broome Community College was forced to cancel afternoon and evening classes.

NYSEG said the power problems were pretty much evenly split between the Towns of Dickinson and Chenango while it waited to get the needed part to repair the substation equipment.
