Written by Tom Petty for his 1976 debut album the song was his first single release hitting the top 40 in 1977.

Petty often went into a side version of Ray Charles 'Hit the Road jack' while performing this song in concert.

Many artist have recorded and performed covers of this song, including 'The Replacements, Grace Jones, Flaw, Christina Perri and Suzi Quatro.

In 2011 while filling in for the group Motorhead, who were not able to performing the show, the Foo Fighters played a 2 and a half hour show in which they featured this week's 'Got Ya Covered' video.
