One of the first heavy metal jams recorded by Steppenwolf in 1968 it reached number 2 on the US Billboard charts.

The song was written by a guy names Mars Bonfire (real name Dennis Edmonton) a Canadian rocker who actually wrote it as a ballad.

I can't imagine couples clutching each other on the dance floor to a slow version of this song.

The song has always been associated with bikers and the spirit of the road, Rolling Stone Magazine named it number 129 on the 500 greatest songs of all time.

The song has been covered by many artists and pretty much every rock and roll bar band ever.

The song has also appeared in several motion pictures starting with 'Easy Rider' in 1969.
