U-Haul: Nicotine-Users Need Not Apply
U-Haul says it doesn’t want people who smoke or use other nicotine products working for the Phoenix-based company.
The Associated Press reports that in states where it can, U-Haul says it will not hire nicotine users starting February 1. The policy does not apply to people hired before then. There are 21 states where U-Haul can legally implement the policy.
The HR Morning legal advice website lists the states the American Lung Association says offers employment protections to smokers. New York is one of those 29 states but Pennsylvania is not on the list.
Many companies ban smoking and other nicotine use like vaping in the workplace, at business-associated functions and on company property, but those restrictions generally do not carry into the employee’s private life.
