A new forest is going to be appearing on the South Side of Binghamton. It won’t take decades to grow and it will be habitat to fairies, dragons, Hobbits and Gnomes in addition to less magical creatures like chipmunks, squirrels and wood chucks.

Ross Park Zoo and Fairy Doors of Broome County are working to transform an underused portion of the zoo property into a magical Imagination Forest.

The project is designed to spark visitors’ imagination and connect with the natural world.

The new forest will offer interactive, tactile experiences.

Organizers are looking for donations of things like fan blades, paint, large bowls to make mushroom tops, condiment bottles, broken china and tile pieces, 18 inch tall tree stumps, wooden spools and plywood. Volunteers are also needed to help create fairy doors, dragon lairs and Hobbit holes.

Designs for turning wooden spools into magical homes can be submitted to marketing@rossparkzoo.org through May 10.  The public will vote on the finalists in May.

The Imagination Forest project can be followed on Facebook

and on the zoo website: rossparkzoo.org.
