I grew up in the Corning-Painted Post area, and our high schools. West High (my alma mater) and our rival East High, each had a Lacrosse team. Our schools were way ahead of their time since there were only a handful of teams in New York State to play against, and If memory serves right, either very few or none in the Southern Tier.

Well, the sport certainly has grown since the 1960s, and most schools now have a Lacrosse team. It's become a very popular sport not just in schools but also professionally.

And it was just announced that the Professional Box Lacrosse Association (PBLA) has formed a new league consisting of eight cities. Three of those eight are here in New York State, and one in Binghamton. The other two are Elmira and Syracuse, with the eighth team to be announced.

Other markets announced include Charlotte, North Carolina, Hampton Roads - (Virginia), New England (Manchester, Springfield), and Trenton, New Jersey. The PBLA is adding at least one more market and is looking into adding other markets as well.

None of the teams has names, since the PBLA is asking the general public to submit names for each team. You can nominate a name through August 2nd through the Professional Box Lacrosse Association website.

The PBLA website states that the league was formed "to help further grow the sport of lacrosse and create the most exciting brand of professional box lacrosse in North America." Their aim is to highlight the fact that Lacrosse is the fastest-growing sport in the country.

The Elmira team will play its games at the First Arena. As for the other teams, including Binghamton, the PBLA website doesn't indicate what venues will be hosting a  team. NO schedule has been released, but the PBLA does indicate that the games will be played beginning in December 2022.
