Tomorrow is National Donut Day and to celebrate, Weis Markets dropped off a few dozen for us here at the Whale. I did my best Homer Simpson impersonation saying, "mmmmmmmm DONUTS!"

Everybody loves donuts, right? I did some research on National Donuts day and this is what I came up with.

Its celebrated on the first Friday of June every year. According to National Day Calendar, it is to honor the Salvation Army women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The women would make the donuts in oil in the soldiers' helmets. I wonder how long it took to get that smell out of their head gear?

The Salvation Army of Chicago started National Donut Day in 1938 as a way to raise funds to help those struggling with the great depression.

Donuts have come a long way since then with the different fillings and toppings. My favorites are Apple and Spice, Blueberry Glaze, and Boston Cream.

So if you celebrate National Donut Day tomorrow you can act like Cliff on Cheers and tell them how the day came to be.
