A popular Northeast Pennsylvania teaching college, that has been attended by thousands of Twin Tiers students over the decades, is one of a half-dozen of Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities that are moving ahead with consolidation.

Mansfield State is to be combined with Bloomsburg and Lock Haven into one institution from the northern part of the Commonwealth.  The State System of Higher Education governing board voted unanimous July 14 to implement the consolidation plan. The plan will begin to be implemented in about a year.

The other combo-institution will be formed by the consolidation of California, Clarion and Edinboro in western Pennsylvania.

The two new institutions will have new names that have not yet been chosen. However, all six campuses are to remain open with their own identities, brands and existing sports teams.
