Main Street Project Slows Traffic Through Endicott, Endwell
Drivers on East Main Street in the town of Union are encountering new traffic patterns because of a long-planned reconstruction job.
The work on Route 17C in Endicott and Endwell caused occasional backups on Monday.
Some preliminary work began at several intersections along a 1.3-mile section of East Main Street last month. Now crews from Lasher Construction of Endwell have started working on some of the more significant elements of the project.
The $2.9 million project calls for repaving and reconfiguring lanes to make traffic flow better. A center lane for motorists making left turns will be added between North Street and Route 26.
The new design will provide for one travel lane in each direction instead of two lanes. Five-foot wide shoulders will be part of the new configuration.
A sidewalk also is being added between Kent Avenue and Hooper Road.
