A Broome County resident is heading to state prison after he admitted possessing a loaded handgun on Binghamton's West Side.

21-year-old Tariq Johnson of Johnson City was sentenced in Broome County Court on Tuesday to 5 years in prison. Prosecutors say Johnson pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Authorities had said Johnson was taken into custody shortly after a May 20 shooting incident at Saratoga Avenue and Delmar Street on Binghamton's South Side.

City police stopped Johnson on Jerome Avenue on the West Side.

Investigators said a 15-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting in which several shots reportedly were fired. The boy's name was not made public and the status of his case was not known.
