Hearing Scheduled on Redevelopment of Former BAE Systems Site

Planners are continuing to explore options for the future of a 27-acre property in Westover owned by the United States Air Force for decades.

A public hearing on a draft environmental impact statement for the site of the former BAE Systems plant at 600 Main Street will be held next week.

The 600,000-square-foot complex was heavily damaged by flooding in September 2011. The facility was demolished in an $18.5 million project paid for by the federal government.

The site now is owned by the Broome County Industrial Development Agency which has been considering potential uses for the property, which is located just west of Route 201.

The agency has released a 443-page report assessing environmental, economic and social impacts of redeveloping the property.

Although the site is one of the few remaining large parcels in the Triple Cities available for future development, the potential for future flooding poses a big challenge to planners.

The virtual public hearing on the environmental impact statement will be held at 5:30 p.m. on June 10. It will be accessible at the Broome IDA website.
