And the scams keep on comin'. Will they ever end? The probable answer is no. I recently received an e-mail demanding I appear in court for an unspecified reason, and if I failed to show up, an arrest warrant would be issued. Thanks, but no thanks.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office has recently issued a notice that they have received reports from some Broome County residents who have received phone calls from scammers who pretended to be Broome County Sheriff deputies or detectives.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, these scammers told those who received these calls, that they had missed their court appearances. Then, the scammer continues with threats of a warrant for arrest or fines of several thousand dollars.

And further, the scammer goes on to mention that the victim is on a recorded call and told not to Inform anyone else of the call. If the victim stays on the line, the scammer then requests payment from a credit card or other ways of payment.

Don’t be fooled, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office will never ask for credit card information or any form of payment over the phone. If you believe you’ve received a scam phone call, please contact the Sheriff’s Office so a report can be filed.” - Brome County Sheriff Fred Akshar

Bottom line, be aware. Don't give out any personal information or payment. If you receive a scam call similar to this or any kind for that matter, contact the Broome County Sheriff's Office at 607-778-1911.
