Chenango County Man Charged in Assault/Standoff With Police
A Chenango County man is being charged with felony assault and resisting arrest after reportedly hitting a Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputy several times with a closed fist as the officer was attempting to arrest him on a warrant and then holding authorities at bay in a camper in Pharsalia for two hours.
Chenango County Sheriff’s officials say 44-year-old Seymour Shaver was wanted on a previous incident before attacking the Deputy shortly before 8:30 Monday night on County road 10 in the Town of Pharsalia.
Authorities say Shaver fled after assaulting the deputy, who was transported by the Norwich Fire Department to Chenango Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Upstate University Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A warrant for assault on a police officer was issued for Shaver and, after searching several locations, Shaver was found holed up in a camper on County Road 47 in the Town of Pharsalia, armed with a long knife. He was eventually taken into custody without further incident by Sheriff’s Deputies, New York State Police and the New York State Police violent Felony Warrant Squad.
