One driver died and another was hurt as the result of a collision involving a sport utility vehicle and a pickup truck in northern Broome County.

The crash happened on Route 79 in the town of Barker shortly before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say 37-year-old Justin Chordas of Chenango Forks was unconscious and trapped in a 2010 Chevrolet HHR when sheriff's deputies arrived.

Chordas was extricated from the SUV by firefighters. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he was pronounced dead around 7:35 a.m.

Investigators say 42-year-old Mark McLain was the operator of the other vehicle, a 2013 Ford F-250 pickup truck. McLain was taken to Wilson for treatment of possible back and knee injuries.

The collision occurred when the SUV driven by Chordas apparently entered the roadway from a driveway as the pickup truck was traveling southeast on Route 79.

The roadway around the scene was closed for nearly three hours after the crash.
