The Broome County Sheriff’s office is warning they’ve been getting complaints about people being contacted by callers claiming they work for the FBI, IRS or a law enforcement agency threatening arrest.

The victims are told they are wanted on a warrant and they have to send money to an address or electronic transfer.

Authorities say people getting the calls are being told to send money through prepaid cards, gift cards, Bitcoin or electronic transfer.

Some scams are collecting telephone numbers and use a valid phone number like one that really is assigned to an agency like the Broome County Sheriff’s office.

If you are contacted about a supposed “outstanding warrant”, verify with your local police agency.

Law enforcement will never demand money regarding a warrant.

If you get a suspicious call, hang up and do not provide any personal information.
