Broome Provides COVID Vaccines ‘On-Demand’

Broome County is ready to take vaccines on the road to try to get more people protected against COVID-19.  The County is launching Vaccines on Demand that sends paramedics and Health Department professionals to any group, business or school with more than ten people that want to get the shot.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says turnout at the mass vaccination location at SUNY Broome Community College and pop-up pods like one recently at Binghamton High School has been trending lower.

The County currently has about 48 percent of the entire population with at least the first shot of their COVID-19 vaccine with a majority of people who aren’t inoculated saying that accessibility is a big problem.

Officials say they want to make getting vaccinated easier so anyone who wants a shot can get one.  Garnar says “reach out and we’ll bring it to you.”  Anyone wanting to arrange an on-demand vaccine visit for ten people of more can go to the vaccine section of gobroomecounty.com under covid information to request a visit. The County currently has several thousand doses of the different brands of the vaccine on-hand and did not order any new doses this week.  Garnar says once there is a need for more shots, they will put in the order and have been assured by the state the doses are available.

One good thing coming from demand falling behind supply now is that Health Department staff is getting a little relief from the pandemic pressure to be able to concentrate on the multiple other health issues handled by the department.
