Motorists in Vestal will have to take a detour on Main Street for several weeks while emergency bridge repair work is being done.

Electronic signs have been advising motorists that the bridge over Choconut Creek near the Weis Market was being closed starting October 2.

Town officials say repairs need to be done before winter so the span will be closed through the end of the month.

Traffic will detour to Route 26 at Meeker and Pierce Hill Roads.

Part of the bridge had been repaired earlier but the other side of the span needed attention after an expansion joint gave way.

Officials said the situation would only get worse with the onset of winter and heavy town snowplows traversing the bridge.
