Parade Lovers, Rejoice! Town of Binghamton, New York Memorial Day Parade Returns

It’s interesting, really. I never imagined that I would look back on my life and long for the days when I was able to attend a parade in person, and yet, here I am.

Parades are just one of the things that we all took for granted before the pandemic stole all of our fun. Instead of being able to stand along the side of the road and watch a parade, the only way we’ve been able to enjoy one in the last year is by being the recipient of a drive-by parade where vehicles came to us, or by driving in a drive-by parade for some other lucky person.

As coronavirus cases continue to drop, New York State is slowly and cautiously re-opening, and with the re-opening comes some of the freedoms that you and I took for granted, such as being able to line a street for a parade.

A question many have asked of me is whether or not parades were going to be allowed this year and if so, whether or not I was aware of any parades happening for Memorial Day. Until this week, my answer to both questions was, “I don't know.”

Paused last year, the Town of Binghamton has announced it will bring back its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 31. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will kick off from the Town of Binghamton Fire Department, Station #1, on Hawleytown Road in the Town of Binghamton and travel down to Saddlemire Road, ending at the cemetery.

As an added treat, the Binghamton Township Historical Society will open the doors to its history museum at 923 Hawleyton Road from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. So that the community can learn about the founders and early residents of the Town of Binghamton.
