Memorial Weekend 2023 is here. Yes, it's the unofficial beginning of the summer season. Many people will be traveling, some will just be relaxing at home or close to home. Cookouts, family gatherings, and the list goes on for many things to do with a (hopefully) three-day weekend.

But let's get back to the reason for Memorial Day. It's a day to honor all soldiers who died during service to the United States. Many services will honor those brave men and women locally and around our country.

There will be many events throughout the Southern Tier of New York and Northeast Pennsylvania. Below is a list of some services being held in Broome and Chenango Counties. For more events, contact your local town, village, city, or county.

In Broome County, Memorial Weekend events will be held as listed below courtesy of the Broome County's Office of Veterans Affairs.

Sunday, May 28th
The Broome County Veterans Memorial Association will be performing Memorial Honors at the following locations:
8:00 am - Floral Park Cemetery
8:25 am - Spring Forest Veterans section
8:45 am - Spring Forest Cemetery at Gen. John C. Robinson grave (Medal of Honor)
9:05 am - Glenwood Cemetery  veteran’s section
11:10 am - Vestal Hills Cemetery veteran’s section (gravesite of Mark Payne KIA Beirut)
11:20 am - Vestal Hills Cemetery (gravesite of Lawrence E. Johnson KIA Vietnam)
12:00 pm - Chenango Valley Cemetery veteran’s section (split ceremony at the gravesite of Sgt Lester Stone and Sgt. Lawrence Peter’s (Medal of Honor recipients Vietnam)

Monday, May 29th - Memorial Day
9:00 am - Washington Street Memorial Service at Spanish American War Memorial -  Confluence Park, Binghamton
9:00 am - Town of Maine Parade - begins at Maine Memorial Elementary and proceeds to Maine Cemetery
9:30 am - Town of Lisle parade - Main Street
10:00 am - Town of Binghamton Parade - begins at Hawleyton Fire Station and proceeds to Hawleyton Cemetery
10:30 am - Endicott Parade - begins at the North end of Washington Avenue followed by a  memorial service at Western Broome Veteran’s Memorial
10:30 am - Memorial Service - Riverhurst Cemetery, Endwell
11:00 am - Whitney Point Parade  - begins at American Legion on 119th Street
11:00 am -  Johnson City Memorial Service - Veteran’s Park Gazebo

In Chenango County - Oxford, NY, four Honor Guard services will be held on Monday, May 29th - Memorial Day according to the  Oxford American Legion Post 376, rain or shine. This year, there will be no parade.

7:45 am - Wreath-laying ceremony and rifle salute at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery on West State Street.

8:30 am - Salute honoring those who died at sea at the Main Street Bridge, and American Legion Auxiliary president, Louise Spicer, will perform the wreath ceremony, tossing a memorial garland into the Chenango River, followed by a rifle salute.

9:00 am - At the Riverview Cemetery, a ceremony placing a wreath honoring the memory of the departed, along with a rifle salute.

10:00 am -  wreath placing and salute to the deceased at the Warn-TenBroeck Cemetery, located on Route 12, seven miles south of Oxford.

A BBQ chicken fundraiser will be held at the Oxford American Legion, with food available for purchase beginning at 9 am, on the Route 12 side.
