Construction crews are busy at several sites as part of an initiative to develop more housing on the West Side of Binghamton.

The First Ward Action Council acquired a half-dozen residential properties and a vacant lot for the project in November.

The existing buildings are to be renovated and a new apartment house is to be constructed at 95 Walnut Street.

Council executive director Jerry Willard said some of the preliminary work for the project got underway recently. Asbestos removal is being done before the building renovation jobs start.

Buildings on Mather, North and Edwards streets will be renovated under the $8.1 million project.

The initiative is being supported by the state department of Homes and Community Renewal. $3 million in state money and $275,000 in federal funds have been allocated for the project.

Willard said people who were living in the existing apartment houses were relocated so the renovation work could begin.

The project is expected to be completed in the spring of next year.
