Is Binghamton New York Leading The 2025 Golden Snowball Award?
Well, didn't we have it easy over the past three or four winters with lower-than-normal snowfall amounts and temperatures that didn't chill us out too much?
Welcome to the 2024-2025 winter season. It's a bit different for sure. This cold snap isn't winning me over, and I'm guessing you too. But it is all part of living in this winter wonderland of the Southern Tier of New York and Northeast Pennsylvania.
By the way, spring is just 57 days away. Most likely it will still be cold and maybe snowy, but at least we know the end will be near for this winter/

Each winter, I like to check out the Golden Snowball website to see how Binghamton is doing as far as snowfall totals are concerned, comparing the amount to the other four New York State cities that are in the running for the honors of the Golden Snowball Award.
Normally, Binghamton lands around 3rd or 4th place, with Albany usually at the tail end. The other cities listed, include Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, all heavy snow hitters. Interestingly, during the winter of 2020-2021, Binghamton came in 3rd, beating Syracuse, which is rare.
During the 2016-2017 winter season, Binghamton took the award for the most snowfall of the five cities with a total of 135.2 inches. The yearly average for Binghamton is 86.5. In 2nd place, it was Syracuse with 134.9 inches of snow.
So, where do we stand so far this year? Surprisingly, the Golden Snowball website says Binghamton has had 54.1 inches of snow so far, which is more than the other four cities. Syracuse isn't far behind though, with 51.8.
There's still a lot of winter to come, so we'll see how things play out. I'm rooting for last place, or even next to last. I'm tired of shoveling snow.
