Congratulations. You made it through one of the most stressful and wonderful times of the year. The holiday season is over. Whew!

Now, winter really has a hold on us for several weeks. But that dosné mean we just shut down for the cold, dark winter—just the opposite.

This year (so far) we have seen more snowfall at this time than last year, so maybe this will be a good year for skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. Outdoor activities are everywhere in the Southern Tier of New York.

Do Your Winter Hike Planning In Advance

The NYS DEC recommends you have a plan before heading out on a winter hiking trip.

  • Learn all you can about the area you'll be visiting in advance. Check the trail conditions before setting out.
  • Check the weather situation. YOu don't want to be caught up in a storm that you can't get out of.
  • Do not go out alone, Bring along at least one other person.
  • Know your skill level and physical capabilities.
  • Choose trails that you know you can handle. Keep in mind that it is more difficult to move through snow.
  • End your hike before the sun goes down.
  • Let a family member, friend,  co-worker, or whoever is not joining you, of your hiking plans, along with an emergency contact...just in case.
  • Do you have the NYS DEC Dispatch phone number in your phone's address section? Good, but remember not to rely on cell service in all areas. To be only in an emergency, the number is 1-833-697-7264, or call 911.
  • Check trail conditions before hiking
