SUNY Broome Culinary School Wins NYS Historic Preservation Award
The lengthy efforts to transform a century-old building in Binghamton into a state-of-the-art culinary school is being recognized by New York State.
The 118-year-old Carnegie Library building is now the SUNY Broome Culinary and Event Center thanks to a $21.5 million rehabilitation project.
February 4, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the project and ten others were being awarded the 2020 State Historic Preservation Awards. The Binghamton project received the Excellence in Historic Building Rehabilitation Award.
The project used tax credits and other funding to complete the transformation from a rapidly deteriorating but beautiful historic building into an educational and community asset, opening its doors to students and faculty in January, 2020.

According to nyslandmarks.com, the cornerstone for the library was laid October 15, 1903 with philanthropist Andrew Carnegie contributing $75,000 toward the construction two years later.
The building on Exchange Street was home to Broome County’s largest library until 2000 when a new facility, now known as the Jeffrey Kraham Broome County Library, opened on Court Street. The central library was named after the former Broome County Executive in 2015, a year before he passed away from cancer.
