Southern Tier Officials Expect Busy Post-Pandemic, Warm Weather Halloween
Area law enforcement officials are continuing their patrols looking for drunk and dangerous drivers through the rest of the Halloween holiday.
Area police agencies reported a lot of activity, especially in hot spots for adult parties this weekend like downtown Binghamton, but no major incidents were reported.
Meanwhile, motorists are reminded to be aware that children may be excited and not paying attention as they dart across roads as they go trick-or-treating this evening. They also may be less visible dressed in dark costumes and not be able to see as well with vision restricted by masks and costumes.
With fairly clear weather forecast and a lifting of COVID restrictions, a good turnout of little monsters trolling for candy is anticipated.
Homeowners who wish to participate in handing out treats should make sure their paths are well lit and there are no hazards like open flame to endanger visiting children.
Children under 12 should always be accompanied by an adult and only visit homes you know. Children should not be allowed to eat any of their treats until they are checked over by an adult. While incidents of tampering have always been extremely rare, authorities this year have raised concerns about fentanyl that has been disguised as candy or is packaged in candy wrappers. Authorities say anything that is not wrapped should be considered suspicious and “when in doubt, throw it out.”
Family pets may be frightened by all the activity. Make sure dogs and cats are kept securely inside where they cannot escape or where they cannot harm or be harmed by strangers in the neighborhood and remember, chocolate is toxic to pets.
