There has been some snow in the region and area emergency services officials have reported very slippery conditions and several crashes in rural areas and higher elevations, especially east of Binghamton proper.

There had also been concern about icy conditions with liquid precipitation on the roads and below freezing temperatures.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service is changing some winter terminology to try to clarify cautions for residents.

The Lake Effect Snow Watch and a Freezing Rain Advisory are being changed to Winter Storm Watch or Advisory.  A Snow Squall Alert is being added when white-out conditions from bursts of snow are possible.

The Southern Tier and Central New York are among about a half-dozen regions in the United States trying out the Snow Squall Alert.
