Congressman Antonio Delgado, whose district includes part of Broome County, has been chosen to be New York state's next lieutenant governor.

Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday morning announced that she is appointing Delgado for the post, which became vacant when Brian Benjamin quit after he was indicted on federal bribery charges.

The 45-year-old Delgado represents New York's 19th Congressional District, which encompasses several Hudson Valley counties. The town of Sanford in eastern Broome County also is in the district.

In her announcement, Hochul said she is looking forward to working with Delgado "to usher in a new era of fairness, equity, and prosperity for communities" across New York state.

Delgado was first elected to Congress in 2018. In a statement released by Hochul's office, Delgado said:

"New Yorkers deserve a Lieutenant Governor who's working day and night to make lives better for working people and their families. Upstate, downstate, doesn't matter. We all want the same things, security, family, and opportunity."

New York state Democratic Party leaders now plan to move quickly to ensure that Delgado's name will appear as Hochul's running mate on next month's primary ballot.
