A Binghamton man is accused of threatening a man with a gun and firing the weapon in front of several people, including a child.

Broome County Sheriff’s officials say 27-year-old Tyler Backus is charged with felony Reckless Endangerment and other counts in connection with the incident Wednesday, March 16 on Patrick Avenue in the Town of Chenango.

Deputies had gotten a report of a man with a handgun threatening another person and firing a round into the ground.

Investigators say they determined Backus had been armed with a revolver-style handgun and had approached a man and threatened him before shooting the gun in front of several witnesses, including the minor.  There were no reports of injuries.

Deputies say before they got there, Backus got rid of the gun and they were unable to locate it.

In addition to Reckless Endangerment, Backus is charged with misdemeanor counts of Menacing and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

He was ordered to appear in Town of Chenango Court at a later date.
