Gyms and health club facilities in New York state will be permitted to resume operations if they comply with strict guidelines to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced the plan to allow the businesses to reopen after being closed for the past five months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cuomo said gyms will be able to operate at one-third capacity starting August 24. He said there will be a mandatory mask-wearing requirement.

Ventilation systems at the businesses must meet state guidelines. Local governments are to inspect gyms within two weeks of opening.

The governor said localities must enforce the state regulations.

Meanwhile, bowling alleys in New York state began to reopen Monday after Cuomo issued guidelines for their operation on Friday.
