New Johnson City Aldi Store Opens Near the Oakdale Mall
Discount grocery chain Aldi has closed a store in Westover as operations start at a
nearby location in Johnson City.
The new store is just east of the Wegmans store on Harry L. Drive. It replaces the company's first Broome County store, which opened at 619 Main Street nearly 25 years ago.
A couple of dozen people lined up just before the new Aldi location opened for business Thursday morning.
Like most Aldi units, the Johnson City store has about 12,000 square feet of selling space. By comparison, the Wegmans supermarket on the other side of Route 201 has 122,000 square feet of space.
Aldi also has stores in Vestal and in the Town of Chenango. Three years ago, the company was preparing to open its first store in Tioga County. Aldi sought zoning changes for a site on Route 17C in the Town of Owego but that plan was abandoned.
