What Do New Green Lights on Snow Plows Mean for NY Drivers?
Well, we are past the "when will see the first snowfall" phase of the winter season. Now, we are in the "how much snow are we going to get" phase of the cold, snowy months ahead.
Just a reminder to keep your sidewalks and stairs/steps cleaned off of snow and ice after snow events. Most, if not all municipalities have time limits to get that chore done, plus it helps to keep your family and anyone accessing your sidewalk/steps, safe.
When it comes to winter travel the New York State Department of Transportation staff work hard to keep our roadways clear of snow and ice throughout the winter. Did you know NYS DOT plows travel at 35 mph (slower than the posted speed limit?)

The NYS DOT has some tips that you should remember when driving in snowy conditions, and approaching a snow plow:
- Maintain a safe distance
- Slow down when approaching a plow
- Adjust speed to the conditions
- The safest place to drive is BEHIND the snowplow where the road is clear and salted
New this year (2024), NYS DOT Thruway plows now have a new feature. Each is equipped with green hazard lights. They are located on the back of each plow along with the amber hazard lights.
The reason for the addition of green lights is to improve the visibility of the plow, especially during times when poor weather conditions or low-light conditions exist. The Thruway Authority has a fleet of 260 large plow trucks, 11 tow plows, and 142 smaller plows.
Be safe, and prevent serious accidents like the one in the following short video from the New York State DOT.
