Margaretville New York Man Sent To Prison For Killing Dog
According to the District Attorney of Delaware County, New York, Shawn J. Smith, it was announced that James Lor of Margaretville pled guilty to Aggravated Cruelty to Animals.
On March 12, 2024, New York State troopers responded to a 911 alert from members of the community to a home in Margaretville.
On March 21, 2024, the Delaware County Grand Jury issued a one-count indictment alleging that Lor had committed the crime of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. He was arrested and remanded without bail for violating the terms of an unrelated probated sentence according to the Delaware County District Attorney.

On August 12, 2024, James Lor appeared before the Delaware County Court and pled guilty to Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. He admitted that he killed a dog using a knife in the Village of Margaretville.
During his testimony, Lor stated that he believed he was acting out of mercy for the dog and that he was not cruel, and admitted he should have taken the dog to a vet to be properly put down. Lor described in detail, the killing of the dog.
Today brings a close to a truly senseless crime. When Mr. Lor killed that dog, he did not do so out of mercy or compassion. He did so out of cruelty towards a defenseless pet. This sentence reflects that fact.” Delaware District Attorney Shawn J. Smith
Lor was sentenced to one and a third to four years in prison for violating the terms of his probation, with an expected one-year sentence to follow on the animal cruelty case.
First Assistant District Attorney Schuyler Konior Kinneman prosecuted the case.
