Greenway Work to Delay Binghamton, Vestal Traffic for Weeks
People who travel on Route 434 between Vestal and downtown Binghamton should brace for traffic tie-ups continuing into next month.
Eastbound and westbound motorists have faced lengthy delays along the Vestal Parkway near the city line in recent months due to construction work on a bike and pedestrian pathway.
Significant backups have occurred during periods of heavy traffic in the morning and afternoon as workers installed new signals at the intersection of Vestal Avenue and Normandy Court.
A state Department of Transportation spokesperson said work at the intersection is expected to continue through this week. More work in the area of the intersection is planned in the spring.
Lane closures in the project area now are scheduled to continue until the second week of December. The closures could continue if weather permits.
The cost of the Greenway continues to grow. In 2016, it was billed as a $16 million project. The current construction contract cost now is approaching $25 million.
According to the DOT, the project is on schedule to be completed next summer.
