As we get into the dog days of summer, there is much talk about the rise in positive COVID-19 cases across New York State.

New York State is also seeing a spike in COVID-19 cases, and today, Governor Andrew Cuomo talked about what the state plans to do to combat the rise in cases over the last month.

Cuomo announced that 75 percent of New Yorkers have been vaccinated, while 25 percent have not been vaccinated. The 25 percent works out to roughly 3.5 million people, which is higher than 21 states' total population.

Cuomo warned people who have not received the vaccine yet that they need to do so. Over 72 percent of the new cases in the state are the highly contagious Delta Variant and only 0.15 percent of vaccinated New Yorkers have had a "breakthrough infection."

There were over 1,900 new COVID-19 cases in the state today, which is roughly six times more than it was just a month ago.

Cuomo urged those who are not vaccinated to get the vaccine today and said there is no "logical theory for vaccine hesitancy now."

While there was no talk of mask mandates being reintroduced, Cuomo did say that if the state doesn't make progress (getting people vaccinated), there will be more sickness, infections, and hospitalizations.

Cuomo also announced that they will be releasing $15 million in funds to six community-based organizations across the state to help boost vaccination rates and target problem zip codes.

UB Jacobs School of Medicine’s Dr. Thomas Russo told WKBW that if rates continue to go up across Western New York and New York as a whole, then mask mandate consideration will be back on the table.

Many are wondering if mask mandates will come back to the picture in New York and while that hasn't happened, there are still questions with the infection rates increasing.
