Finding Treasures At Home During the Pandemic
This happens to me all the time. I'm searching for something at home, but I can't remember where I put the item, even though I committed to memory not to forget. Well, it almost never works.
For example, I misplaced my birth certificate recently. I thought it was in my safe. Well I found one third of it anyway. I needed it to upgrade my driver's license to the enhanced version. In addition to a partial birth certificate, I found two other items that also seemed to be birth certificates. Odd, I thought, but whatever. I decided to bring all three to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Well, turns out the official birth certificate was the one that I only had one third of, and of course the section I needed was the part that has the seal on it. That was missing. So I had to apply for a new one. I was born in Texas, so it took almost two months to get here, and cost me 25 dollars.
Fast forward to last weekend, while casually looking through a filing cabinet at home that I've not looked through in years, I found the other two thirds of my original birth certificate. Wonderful.
But more importantly, I found badges from when I was in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from the mid 1960s. I also found a small picture of my dad, and on the back a number was listed along with my name, stating that it was a United States Savings Bond number.
Apparently it was purchased by grandfather just before I turned two years old. I don't have anything that states I have, or own, a savings bond, but when searching the number online, it appears there is still a value on it. At the time of purchase, I didn't have a social security number, so I don't know if I can even claim the money, if there even is any. It's possible it was cashed in by anyone else who may have had access to it.
Not sure where or who to turn to for information, so the mystery remains. The cash value isn't much, but I'd still like to cash it in if it still exists. It's amazing the things you find when you aren't looking for it.
