And that's nothing to brag about.

We see tornado activity every year in many parts of the country, especially in the Great Plains areas dubbed Tornado Alley throughout states including Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.

According to NOAA, tornadoes can occur any time of the year, but most occur from May through July, depending on the part of the country. NOAA also notes that while tornadoes can happen at any time of day or night, most tornadoes occur between 4 and 9 p.m.

But while New York and Pennsylvania don't get much tornado activity, you wouldn't know it to be true after the storms we've experienced this year. Tornadoes this week dropped in several parts of the state.

The National Weather Service Binghamton confirmed the most powerful tornado this week was an EF-2 in Rome on Tuesday. An EF-0 was confirmed in Virgil on Monday.

The National Weather Service Albany confirmed three tornadoes on Tuesday - an EF-0 near Chestertown, an EF-1 near Wells, and an EF-1 near Oxbow Lake, New York.

On July 10th, the National Weather Service Binghamton confirmed a microburst east of Ovid New York with peak winds estimated at 80 mph, and an EF-0 tornado in Forestport in Oneida County with an estimated peak wind of 80 mph.

Spectrum News 1 reported that seven tornadoes have been confirmed just this week. In addition to those mentioned above, others include the following communities: Pavillion in Genesee County, Canandaigua in Ontario County, Piesco in Hamilton County, and Warrensburg in Warren County.

Spectrum News 1 notes that two other areas are being assessed in Canastota in Madison County and Montour Falls in Schuyler County for a possible tornado classification.

UPDATE 7/19/24: Two microbursts were confirmed at Monterey and Montour Falls in Schuyler County.

According to the Rochester First website, a record 14 tornadoes have been confirmed for July 2024 so far, dating back to 1950 when tornado activity began being recorded. In comparison, New York State averages 2 during July and an average of 9 per year.
