Inspired by the 1966 Sunset Strip riots, the song was written by Stephen Stills for his band Buffalo Springfield, the single hit #7 on the US Billboard.

The song became a well known protest song, and although the title of the song never appears in the song, it's often identified by the line "Stop, Children, Whats' That Sound"
