Authorities blame a wayward whitetail for a tractor trailer crash that slowed traffic to a crawl all morning August 14 on Route 17 eastbound between the Tioga County line and Vestal.

There were no injuries but a truck crashed into the median and began leaking fuel at 4:14 a.m. when the driver swerved to miss a deer.

Through late morning, motorists who were unable to detour onto Route 434 or 17C found themselves sitting on the highway as one lane was closed down for hours.

The fuel spill was reportedly contained to the median area and did not leak into the nearby Susquehanna River.
