October 14 is a federal holiday and that means most public schools are off, banks are closed and there is no mail delivery.

The 60th annual Columbus Day Parade and Tournament of Bands marching band competition takes place in downtown Binghamton with a half dozen high school marching bands competing for top honors in band, guard and drum major categories. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. at Main and Arthur Streets on the West Side and proceeds east to the Broome County Court House.

Main and Court Streets will be closed for the march, which should be less than an hour.

The Italian Festival also takes place on Water Street at Boscov’s from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Water Street was blocked off overnight for the event and will reopen following the festival.
