October 1st, 1982 was all about a couple of names - Jack and Diane.

That was the day John Mellencamp's song Jack and Diane, and the album it's found on, 'American Fool', topped the singles and album charts in the US.

The song held on to the number one spot for four weeks, and the album became the best selling LP of 1982. Other hits off the album, include Hand to Hold on To, and Hurts So Good, which got as far as the number two position on the US singles chart.
