Broome County reports its biggest single-day jump in deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic but officials say the deaths happened over the course of several weeks.

Broome on December 1 reported nine new deaths for a total of 131.

Looking back at running records from the start of the pandemic, the county, when reporting additional deaths, had typically announced one to four fatalities over a single-day update.

Broome had 105 new cases of the coronavirus to report December 1 for a total of five-thousand, 313.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar posted on his facebook page that the reports came from a congregate care setting that had provided the deaths that occurred over time in one update.

No other counties in the Southern Tier added to their death rate in the Tuesday reports.

Chenango county had four new cases for a total of 643. There have been ten deaths.

Cortland County had 12 new cases for a total of 1,447. There have been five deaths.

Delaware County reported eight new cases for a total of 380. There have been nine lives lost in Delaware County.

Tioga County added 22 positive cases for a total of 1,170. There have been 54 deaths.

Statewide, 66 more New Yorkers died of COVID-19 and there were seven-thousand 285 new cases.

Officials are bracing for another big spike in cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the next few days as the effects of travel for Thanksgiving start to be seen.
