Broome County Breaks Down Overdose Numbers

Broome County Officials report 432 responses to overdose calls to emergency services so far this year.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, the Broome County Health Department, Office of Mental Health and Office of Emergency Services announced the numbers as part of September being National Recovery Month.

Officials say the recorded calls were for any kind of overdose, not just opioids, including non-narcotics, alcohol or any other substance upon which a person can overdose.

There was a big spike in reports in March when 85 overdose calls were answered.  Most months noted between 55 and 62 calls with the lowest number of reports in January at 20.

Broome County is also currently tracking fatal and non-fatal overdoses in real time using a secured application developed by the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program.

Officials say that data is being compiled and when it is done, information will be able to be released in public health alerts when necessary.
