A memorial celebration and service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. won't be held in downtown Binghamton as scheduled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The events sponsored by the Broome County Martin Luther King Jr. Commission were scheduled for Monday evening.

But program coordinator Naomi Branch said the organization has decided to postpone the activities due to recent developments regarding the spread of Covid in the community.

Branch said the events have been rescheduled for Saturday, April 9. That will be a few days after the 54th anniversary of King's assassination. He was fatally shot on April 4, 1968.

Monday evening's program was to have started with a march from the MLK Promenade on Wall Street to the Salvation Temple Church on Main Street.
